Professional Orchestration Vol 2B: The Second Key: Orchestrating the Melody Within the Woodwinds & Brass

Professional Orchestration Vol 2B: The Second Key: Orchestrating the Melody Within the Woodwinds & Brass by Peter Lawrence Alexander
English | November 1, 2009 | ISBN: 0939067935 | 714 Pages | PDF | 153,5 MB

Professional Orchestration 2B, Orchestrating the Melody Within the Woodwinds and Brass, completes the second volume in the Professional Orchestration Series, and continues Alexander Publishing's historic breakthrough in orchestration instruction. Volume 2B details, for the first time, dozens of woodwind and brass writing techniques previously known by only a few top professional film orchestrators, composers, and arrangers and applicable to both live performance and MIDI mock-ups. Loaded with references from 38 different works in a large full page/full score format. Techniques are referenced meticulously in the low, medium, high, and very high registers. For fast referencing for both winds and brass, techniques are organized by unisons, two-parts, three-parts, and four-parts. Each technique has a brief commentary pointing out other score details, and often, electronic scoring insights. The Professional Orchestration Series has been endorsed by winners of the Academy, Grammy, Emmy, BAFTA, G.A.N.G., Telly and Ava Gold Awards.

Biopsychosocial Approaches in Neurorehabilitation
Jonathan Evans, Huw Williams - Biopsychosocial Approaches in Neurorehabilitation: Assessment and Management of Neuropsychiatric, Mood and Behavioural Disorders
Published: 2003-06-10 | ISBN: 1841699454 | PDF | 340 pages | 4 MB

There has been significant progress in the field of neurorehabilitation over the past twenty years, particularly in the assessment and management of cognitive impairment. More recently, the stakeholders in neurorehabilitation - clinicians, researchers, purchasers of services and clients - have become aware of the need to develop systems and services for managing the wide ranging psycho-social sequelae of acquired brain injury (ABI). Mood, behavioural and neuropsychiatric conditions have been found to be highly prevalent. Such disorders, at clinical or sub-clinical levels, are disturbing for clients themselves, and for their families, and present a challenge for enabling survivors to regain social roles. Many individuals also experience difficulties in related areas, such as pain management, drug and alcohol misuse, and in maintaining relationships. Given the wide-ranging psychological, psychiatric, health and social sequelae of ABI, rehabilitation services are often responding to people whose needs are complex and for which the evidence base for practice may be limited. In this Special Issue of Neuropsychological Rehabilitation, leading international experts provide reviews of current thinking on mood, behaviour and neuropsychiatric conditions, along with issues of drug and alcohol use, pain, sexuality and relationships after brain injury. Assessment and management issues are addressed, along with implications for service delivery in developed and in developing world contexts. This Special Issue will be invaluable to a wide range of neurorehabilitation professionals including clinical psychologists, neuropsychologists, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, neurologists, neuropsychiatrists, clinical nurse specialists, physiotherapists, and case managers. The volume will also be of benefit to those planning or purchasing brain injury rehabilitation services.

Elements of Mathematics: General Topology, Pt.1

Elements of Mathematics: General Topology, Pt.1 by Nicolas Bourbaki
English | January 1967 | ISBN: 0201006367 | Pages: 437 | DJVU | 6,9 MB

Most branches of mathematics involve structures of a type different from the algebraic structures (groups, rings, fields, etc.) which are the subject of the book Algebra of this series: namely structures which give a mathematical content to the intuitive notions of limit, continuity and neighborhood. These structures are the subject matter of the present book.

Strongly Nonlinear Oscillators: Analytical Solutions
Livija Cveticanin - Strongly Nonlinear Oscillators: Analytical Solutions
Published: 2014-06-30 | ISBN: 3319052713 | PDF | 239 pages | 6 MB

This book provides the presentation of the motion of pure nonlinear oscillatory systems and various solution procedures which give the approximate solutions of the strong nonlinear oscillator equations. The book presents the original author's method for the analytical solution procedure of the pure nonlinear oscillator system. After an introduction, the physical explanation of the pure nonlinearity and of the pure nonlinear oscillator is given. The analytical solution for free and forced vibrations of the one-degree-of-freedom strong nonlinear system with constant and time variable parameter is considered. Special attention is given to the one and two mass oscillatory systems with two-degrees-of-freedom. The criteria for the deterministic chaos in ideal and non-ideal pure nonlinear oscillators are derived analytically. The method for suppressing chaos is developed. Important problems are discussed in didactic exercises. The book is self-consistent and suitable as a textbook for students and also for professionals and engineers who apply these techniques to the field of nonlinear oscillations.

Grounding Global Climate Change: Contributions from the Social and Cultural Sciences

Grounding Global Climate Change: Contributions from the Social and Cultural Sciences by Heike M. Greschke and Julia Tischler
English | 2014 | ISBN: 9401793212 | 181 pages | PDF | 2,3 MB
This book traces the evolution of climate change research, which, long dominated by the natural sciences, now sees greater involvement with disciplines studying the socio-cultural implications of change.
In their introduction, the editors chart the changing role of the social and cultural sciences, delineating three strands of research: socio-critical approaches which connect climate change to a call for cultural or systemic change; a mitigation and adaption strand which takes the physical reality of climate change as a starting point, and focuses on the concerns of climate change-affected communities and their participation in political action; and finally, culture-sensitive research which places emphasis on indigenous peoples, who contribute the least to the causes of climate change, who are affected most by its consequences, and who have the least leverage to influence a solution. Part I of the book explores interdisciplinarity, climate research and the role of the social sciences, including the concept of ecological novelty, an assessment of progress since the first Rio climate conference, and a 'global village' case study from Portugal.

The Idea of Europe in British Travel Narratives, 1789-1914

The Idea of Europe in British Travel Narratives, 1789-1914 By Robert H. Wagstaff
English | Ashgate Pub Co (2014) | ISBN-10: 1472429540 | 238 pages | ?PDF | 2.41 MB
"The nineteenth century was the heyday of travel, with Britons continually reassessing their own culture in relation to not only the colonized but also other Europeans, especially the ones that they encountered on the southern and eastern peripheries of the continent. Offering illustrative case studies, Katarina Gephardt shows how specific rhetorical strategies used in contemporary travel writing produced popular fictional representations of continental Europe in the works of Ann Radcliffe, Lord Byron, Charles Dickens, and Bram Stoker."
She examines a wide range of autobiographical and fictional travel narratives to demonstrate that the imaginative geographies underpinning British ideas of Europe emerged from the spaces between fact and fiction. Adding texture to her study are her analyses of the visual dimensions of cross-cultural representation and of the role of evolving technologies in defining a shared set of rhetorical strategies. Gephardt argues that British writers envisioned their country both as a part of the Continent as a whole and as distinct from the British Isles, anticipating the contradictory British discourse around European integration that is evident in Britain's simultaneous fear that the European super-state will violate British sovereignty and its desire to play a more central role in the European Union.

Fueling the Gilded Age: Railroads, Miners, and Disorder in Pennsylvania Coal Country

Fueling the Gilded Age: Railroads, Miners, and Disorder in Pennsylvania Coal Country (Culture, Labor, History) by Andrew B. Arnold
English | 2014 | ISBN: 0814764983 | 287 pages | PDF | 2,8 MB
If the railroads won the Gilded Age, the coal industry lost it. Railroads epitomized modern management, high technology, and vast economies of scale. By comparison, the coal industry was embarrassingly primitive.
Miners and operators dug coal, bought it, and sold it in 1900 in the same ways that they had for generations. In the popular imagination, coal miners epitomized anti-modern forces as the so-called "Molly Maguire" terrorists.
